Since its launch, Action for Development (AfD) has achieved remarkable results through its education programs, which focus on some of Afghanistan’s most vulnerable groups: street-working children and adolescent girls. These initiatives have directly impacted the lives of thousands of children, creating sustainable educational opportunities despite the overwhelming challenges present in the country. We would like to take you through our journey of 2024 by showcasing the most significant achievements.
In 2024, within the scope of education, the AfD operated three key programs aimed at supporting vulnerable children: the School for Street-Working Children, the Home-Based Schools for Girls, and the Awareness Campaign against Trafficking in Persons. Through the first two initiatives (Street-children and Home-based programs), Action for Development (AfD) directly impacted the lives of 747 children, adolescents, and their families.
To maintain the School for Street-Children and the Home-based Schools for girls, the organization relied on the work of 26 professionals in the field, 21 of which are teachers.
The school provides 410 vulnerable children (210 girls and 200 boys), with free teaching and coaching aiming to serve as a springboard for integrating street children into the public school system. In addition to the computer classes, we reached 486 street-working children.
For physical activities and sports practice, AfD rents a sports center in the neighborhood, where the children can play soccer three times a week for an hour (Saturday, Monday and Wednesday).
Along with education the schools also provided one medical health check per student as well as one meal per day to the children with 89'800 meals provided in 2024.
During the year number of girls enrolment into home based education kept stable, having 261 girls enrolled at the end of the year. This shows that there is a growing demand from girls willing to continue their studies.
It is obvious that the street working children are the highly vulnerable towards the trafficking in person. AfD has made significant progress in raising awareness and engaging stakeholders. Through targeted efforts in Baghlan, Takhar, and Parwan, the initiative directly reached 2,254 participants (touching base with 15,778 indirect beneficiaries), equipping them with the knowledge needed to recognize and prevent trafficking.
Moving forward, Action for Development (AfD) remains committed to strengthening the possiblities of learning through various formal and informal education schemes.
