Support Education for Marginalized Kabul Children

Dear Friends and Supporters,

The exact number of street children in Kabul is impossible to quantify... They are out on the streets all day long, exposed to harsh conditions dominated by pollution and high noise levels and without any protection or safety measures from abuse. The short and long term consequences of street work are complex: injury/death caused by traffic accidents; suicide bombings and explosions; verbal, physical and sexual abuse; illegal work involving drugs. A vicious circle of illiteracy and lack of skills for job opportunities is tied to the cycle of poverty, debt, vulnerability and dependence. These are the main reasons why our organization, Action for Development, decided to tackle the issue of street children by introducing an innovative project in the streets of Kabul.

Thanks to your generous donations received through the Global Giving platform during the last few months, we managed to do the first, but crucial steps in order to support the reintegration of Kabul`s street children. We are happy to share our success with you on this report.

Your kind support made the following achievements possible:

• Our colleagues on the ground identified and enrolled to our street school 10 street children aged between 8 to 13. The identification of the prospective students was done by interviewing a street child and confirming his/her interest in obtaining education and willingness to learn. We also noted if the kid had the family support and collected the information about his/her background. A family location and a place of living were confirmed by the local authority.
• The place for the classroom is identified and rented.
• Equipment for the room ( as chairs, blackboard, notebooks, pencils, pens and colouring pencils) is ordered.
• Teaching material is being discussed and work is in progress to prepare the training material.

We understand that education is the only way to bring sustainable peace to families and the country.
