1. PLE Candidates Examination Fees, Hammerslag School.
In 2019 we had only 10 students sitting for the final national examinations,
2020 and 2021, COVID-19 affected, no exams but we had students studying at home, materials distribution and printing at the cost of the school, including transportation costs to reach candidates in their different villages and towns.
2022 has seen a rise in the number of PLE Candidates. They have less than 30 days to sit for the PLE exams this November 2022, and we need to feed them at the examinations center, transportation, includes pay for the invigilation fees at the examinations center. A government requirement for private student. About 50 dollars per child other cost withstanding, giving a total of 1500 dollars to cover 30 needy STUDENTS.
The economic situation is not good enough for the disadvantaged communities and their households.
Today a child to sit for a Primary Leaving Examination will cost 100 dollars, this includes meeting all examination requirements, includes paying a photographer, Examination Center, (the government school used as a center for sitting candidates) pay for the invigilating teacher's, food for candidates during examination period , transportation, this includes moving support staff to cook food for the candidates. This cost are changing each academic calendar.
Since most of our sitting candidates belong to serous vulnerability groups, such as street Children, orphaned children, or neglected or live with old, single and disabled persons, they would need lots of assistance to get an education.
2. Feeding Support for boarding children
School meals are becoming a big deal this days, we have no money to keep boarding children continue getting regular meals, say at least two meals a day, about 10 dollars. With that a child can have a cup of porrage in the morning and posho, beans for the last meal of the day and they go to bed, after prep time. Night studies.
In the village, the situation is worse for day students, who come to school and go back home, there are many such children Skipping lessons, just to go back home to look for what to eat and never return to school to complete the days lessons. When we make a follow up with individual homes, relatives, guardians of these affected families, households. We are told or they say it's very difficult time for them all, the food prices have gone up and children go out to work, get little money, and go look for food in the streets.its when they work in people's gardens that a meal can be got for the day, and if it's not possible to get what to eat, the child will not return to school for afternoon lessons, because she or he is hungry.
This situation is very alarming, and is costing lots of poor students lesson time, teachers try to put up remedial lessons in their planning but it's something you want to do for disadvantaged children but the school has no money to feed, non sponsored children such that they become available for the àfternoon lessons.
The final outcome is such child missing lessons will not perform well in the final exams or may most likely fail to turn up to sit for the final exams because there is no money or sponsor to make that attainable.
UKRAINE Russia war is the song and it's the poor who are dancing more to it's effects. Food or an ordinary meal is not eaten if you have no money this days in Uganda poorest homestead. climate change has also added to the problem. More and more families and children are hungry each day each week, month and year. Nobody has the direct answer.
To feed a single child at school or in boarding is now a struggle to all boarding schools. The countryside, climate changes has made it difficult to grow and harvest crops in proper yeild and time. food items are now imported and with inflated prices due to over taxation at all boader points.
We need more help to feed and pay for this Children's examinations requirements during PLE November 2023 and beyond.
Staff house and Toilets.
Teachers need school accommodation, to keep teachers start lessons on time and support students library needs. But if the teacher has to start worrying about starting to walk back to his village early enough to avoid getting home in the dark and remember, they live in dark housing, with no lights to prepare lessons for the next day. Teachers rented accomodations do not have any solar lights, we wish to buy but funds not enough. As we struggle with the examinations and food issues, we also have the issue of accomodations for boarding students. We need to build a boy's and girls dormitory.
3. Child sponsorships.(Street/ Orphaned Children)
We have children with no parents, orphaned, coming from the streets. Just this morning as I went to the market I met a 14 year old boy asking for food, he said he'd not eaten for three days and his story was chilling. He said, his father and mom were killed by cattle raiders, his grandma died of cancer and he had no one to help, so he left his village, went to a man who made him look after his cattle to get food but at the time I met him in the market the owner of the home had spent a month a way from home and he was left in the care of a neighbor who didn't treat him well so he had to come looking for any one to give him what to eat. This is very disturbing , I gave him what to eat and handed him to the district local authority.
Children are out there suffering, I wish I had an international volunteer with me to see for himself, I had to hire a bodaboda rider to take him to the district authority, after getting him a meal. A 14 year old boy looking for where to stay. My heart was very heavy at the sight of such a child, begging for food.
I have always desired to build a home to care for such children but it's very difficult to get funds. These children are there and need help. A place to stay and call home.
Another child was caught up, stealing in the same market. today afternoon, a 10 old boy got badly bitten in the market for stealing 1000 Uganda shillings to get something to eat. He was not able to talk and walk, I got a bicycle and asked a volunteer to take him to the clinic to get medicine and treatments. Emergency funds for such situations are not available. This are realities, and they happen to vulnerable children.
It's our prayer that we find a donor to sponsor a home for such children. Because it's not easy to get food or feed many children, no one can add such a child to his family. SHARE NGO is asking for international volunteers and DONOR Support urgently!
Sponsor : street, orphaned children
a) Need a placement, a home to keep them, security and Identity.
b) Education sponsor. School uniform, and other clothing for supported children in boarding.
Scholastics Materials, exercise books, pencils and pens, school bag etc.
c) medical support Child Health
We request more to be donated to cover child health and treatments.COVID-19 left most families very poor and worse for the disadvantaged households struggling to put just a single meal on the table. Now if a child lost a parent, such will have no place to stay or food to eat.
So if a child was picked from the streets or from a vulnerable persons, they come and depends on the donations we get and it includes trying to give medical care when they get Malaria attack.
The challenge here is, it's not cheap to treat a single sick child if you do not have money, prescriptions may be done free by the doctor in a government hospital but you have and must go to a private pharmacy for drugs. Short of this you lose a child.
Many time because our support is limited we gumble when it come to child health support, give a home, education and health issues.
We make a very passionate appeal to all of you now if you want more and better for these children, let's join hands and do more for them. A child sleeping in the streets or toilet and wakes up next morning hungry and very cold is very hurtful.
4. School construction assistance
The students population is growing each year and we have no enough desks, and especially for the nursery children, teachers chairs and tables.
The existing classroom blocks were partitioned to create more classes and this partitions are not enough.
We have asked for funds to expand the school compound to give room for children to play but we have no replies and volunteers to help.
New classroom walls need plaster and paint, and purchase new desks, teacher chairs and tables, and other repairs on the broken desks, and door frames, hinges. Digging up new toilet's to meet the rise in students population.
We have since made such appeal to get funds, even after the visit of two global Giving Staff they saw this need but we have not been successful to find any willing donor to have the walls painted.
We do need some support to buy one acre of land to expand the school compound to build a house to keep street and orphaned ( students dormitories and toilets, bathroom).
5. Teachers Salary. Hammerslag School.
A teacher is paid only 100,000/ Uganda shillings a month, and 300,000/ a single school term. Donor funds we currently get is about 550 dollars each month as recurring donations. This among other things continues to pay teachers, support staff but it's not enough. A cook, matron, day and night watchman is paid only 50,000/ Uganda shillings a month, about 150,000/ a term. We have four such staff employed.
We have wished to get a staff paid 100 dollar per month.
Conclusion!
Skills for self reliance, school drop off students.
One request is how we can help students who are not able to join secondary education, and may wish to join skills training institution and be able to have a futre. Our support is very low to help such children mostly girl child, who now have gotten pregnant as they waited for any opportunity to train or looking for jobs in the streets.
The school would like to appreciate you all for your kind support and help to the education of rural and street orphaned children.
Together we can do better for these children and build them a home. It's my sincerest prayer and hopefully tomorrow we will see those children living with smile.
Life is hard for such children without parents. Help us to help these children have a place to stay (home) and always pray for these children to realize their dreams!
