Education for Poor Children!

 Hello GlobalGiving family,

Thanks to your generous donations over the past three months, we have been able to do the following activities:

1. We purchased 200 kgs of corn, 100 kgs of beans and a large basin of silverfish, which helps us to provide children and teachers porridge for breakfast, lunch and supper for 20 orphans and children during this school term. These children include those with no parents, as well as those children taken in from surrounding areas that were living in the slums with a struggling single parent.
2. We also bought 50 cups, 20 plastic plates, a new large saucepan, 30+ liters of water to prepare porridge for the children. We currently have 65 children, 6 teachers, and 4 support staff eating our meals.
3. To support children that are sleeping at the school, we were able to buy 10 mats, [we could not afford to buy mattresses at this time]. We are currently accommodating them in one of the blocks we had built to use as a school office. The children are happy in their new home, especially for those that have a secure home and access to schooling for the very first time.
4. Funds have been used to purchase much-needed office stationary and teacher learning materials that are currently being used in the classrooms. This includes text books for use in all five classrooms (nursery and primary). We bought 50 copies of the Primary School Curriculum for all subjects: English, mathematics, science, religion, education, physical education, and social studies. Other learning materials include a New Oxford Dictionary, life skills booklets, IT for schools and English story books for all the classrooms. We are still lacking balls or play materials for the children, but hope to raise funds to purchase these soon.
5. Purchased 10 more school desks for the nursery class, as the children were previously sitting on the ground. Lastly, we managed to buy school uniforms, including shoes for the 20 orphaned children, as well as provide them with 6 exercise books, pens, and pencils.

As always, it is our hope to continue to raise funds to buy additional learning supplies, play materials, mattresses and bedding, and food to continue to feed students and staff. As of now, nursery children and primary level five students do not have physical classrooms to study from; but rather share classrooms with primary one and four children. Therefore, primary six and seven classrooms need to be constructed next year to accommodate new students. We are confident that we will achieve these goals and supply these children with the education and opportunity they deserve.
