Dreaming Big - Winter 2019 Update

Fall 2018 marked special milestones for KKOOM’s two college scholars, Se-Hee and YongHoon. While Se-Hee just completed her first year studying Hotel Tourism at Gumi University, YongHoon graduated with his Social Welfare degree from Cyber World University. In November, KKOOM asked Se-Hee and YongHoon to share highlights from their semester about their favorite class and what activities they participated in.

Se-Hee still participates in an English club with Koreans and foreigners. With positive fall memories, she celebrated Halloween and watched a movie together with her English club friends. Not only is she learning English but Chinese as well, which was her favorite class this past fall semester. Her semester scholarship of 700,000 won helped pay fees for her Chinese class and buy supplies to participate in a cocktail competition.Se-Hee works hard to find ways to sharpen her skills as she received the Storytelling Award at the International Barista Contest. We asked Se-Hee what she wanted to share with KKOOM supporters. She thankfully said, “I am always grateful for you to think about and take care of us every semester. I pray that you will always be filled with happy things.”

As YongHoon finished his last semester in college, he worked on weekdays during his free time. On the weekends, he attended church and played with the younger children from Samsungwon Orphanage. His favorite class was “PC Use” sharing that the class was easy because of previously receiving a computer certificate. Your giving helped YongHoon pay his rent and electricity bill. In his final KKOOM scholarship application, YongHoon said, “I will always be grateful to KKOOM! I always appreciate it and think of you often. It was very helpful to help me financially until graduation.”

KKOOM will continue providing two young adults with college scholarships in 2019. While YongHoon graduated in the fall, we are excited to have a new scholar starting her college career in spring 2019. With the new school year beginning in March, we look forward to continue sharing how your generosity helps improve the lives of young adults who grew up at Samsungwon Orphanage. Thank you for giving our KKOOM scholars unlimited potential to dream big.

Giving Hope and Making Dreams Possible - Fall 2018

Even with the odds against YongHoon and Se-Hee, they are both thriving to succeed in their collegiate career. YongHoon is in his last semester at Cyber World University majoring in Social Welfare. An article based off the American online education system stated that students who enroll in an institution that is fully online are less likely to earn the proper credentials within eight years compared to students at other types of colleges. Se-Hee is in her second semester at Gumi University studying Hotel Tourism. During my Korea travels this summer to Samsungwon Orphanage’s camping trip, I found out that a lower percentage of female orphans attend college. They are more likely to go straight into the workforce, more often in countries abroad.

Despite their different career paths, YongHoon and Se-Hee are in fields focused on service, whether that is providing social welfare services to children or providing hospitality in the hotel industry. Five years from now, Yonghoon hopes to work with orphan children at Emmanuel Children’s Home, which is another orphanage KKOOM supports financially in Gimcheon. Currently in his last semester, Yonghoon’s overall GPA is a 4.22 showing his dedication to his studies. Your donation to fund college scholarships helps YongHoon pay for his living expenses this semester. He promises to continue studying faithfully until the last day at his university.

Se-Hee had a busy summer studying English with special lectures and participated in the cocktail competition at the Chiemak Festival. Congratulations to Se-Hee on winning an award at the cocktail competition! She is using her scholarship funds to help reimburse herself for the cocktail competition supplies she purchased. “I dream of one day working at Hilton Hotel.” It’s evident that Se-Hee is trying very hard to gain exposure in competitions, festivals, and special lectures so she can make her dream come true.

Your dollars are making a difference in the lives of these two scholars each and every day. You are paving a path of success so they can positively impact other children and international guests. As you have blessed them with your giving, they in return are blessing others with their gifts, talents, and skills. Thank you for sharing hope and making YongHoon and Se-Hee’s dreams possible.

Believing In Her Dreams, Interview with Se-Hee

Se-Hee, a 1st year student at Gumi University

Se-Hee is a KKOOM scholarship recipient at Gumi University who just completed her first semester in college. In late May, while she studied Hotel Tourism, we asked her to update us on her studies and how she’s enjoying school. We hope you enjoy hearing directly from Se-Hee about her college experiences so far (translated from Korean to English).

1. Have you achieved your beginning-of-the-semester goal?

Though I did not achieve it perfectly, I have studied 30 English sentences and words per week and I am trying to achieve my goal in the future.

2. What is your favorite thing about this semester?

I participated in a festival where I made and sold coffee and fruit ade drinks. It was a meaningful and good experience. [Photos from the festival are below]

3. How do you spend your free time?

I participate in school events and conferences to continue practicing what I am learning.

4. What is your favorite class and why?

Barista class. It is interesting to learn about coffee and brew coffee directly.

5. How has this semester’s increase in scholarship money (500,000 KRW to 750,000 KRW), helped you?

I am in a special certification course, practicing with written materials to achieve a level of English certification. The increase in scholarship funds allowed me to purchase supplies for this certification.

6. Do you have anything you would like to say to your “dream” group supporters?

Thank you very much for your help and support every semester. I still have a lot of English to learn, but I will study hard and I want to thank Grace and KKOOM supporters for everything.

We’re grateful to share how diligently See-Hee works both inside and outside the classroom. We are very proud of Se-Hee’s investment in her education, dedication to study English, and application of her classroom studies to real life experiences.
