Renovating Their School Before It Is Too Late

By Marsha Winsryg | AACDP, Director

The school at the Mama Bakita Cheshire Home was built in 2016 from funds donated by an Irish charity. It consisted of two classrooms, physiotherapy and hydrotherapy rooms, and an administration office,

Troubles with the building began a few months ago with heavy rains that continued for several months. The ceilings in the long porch that connects all the classroom and therapy rooms began to leak because seeping water from above had rotted the ceiling material. Classes have continued in the areas where it is relatively dry, so we have begun renovation. Then, when the ceilings were removed it was discovered that the timber above them was also rotting because the actual roof was also compromised. New plans were needed and more materials.

Our current mission is to fix this issue when weather permits, though continuing heavy rainfall has slowed progress while the scope of the work has increased.

The good news is that the Zambezi Community Farm has become an income provider for our families, with large crops of eggplants, beans, kale and onions being sold at the local market and feeding the families too. Best of all, the large corn harvest provided three months of mealie meal for each family.

This month hundreds of tomato seedlings were transplanted into the earth. Tomatoes are one of the most lucrative crops for the collective.

We hope for rain and sun in proper amounts this coming season and especially look forward to a successful tomato harvest.

Thank you for the generosity of our donors and the opportunities that GlobalGiving affords us.
