Summary

At the heart of GEC lies our Changemaker Program, guiding students through the lives of historical and contemporary figures, pivotal events, and the essence of Pan-Africanism. Engaging in community activities across Ghana, students interact with local influencers, fostering a deeper understanding of societal dynamics and their own significance. We envision this journey as pivotal in nurturing our students to become influential leaders, shaping the future of the Diaspora and beyond.

Challenge

The students we work with in Accra lack opportunities to gain exposure to learning experiences outside of their immediate circle and across the continent. Due to challenges from cyclical and generational poverty, students and their families are not aware of and not able to access exchanges with other leaders, other communities, and other organizations. The chance to learn about Ghanain and other Pan-African initiatives around them provides knowledge to bring back to their own community.

Solution

Our Changemaker program- a project under our larger initiative of supporting students and creating future leaders in Ghana- is essential to equip our students with the tools to succeed. Each program session has a theme that focuses on a community need. For example, our students embarked on a malaria awareness campaign. This gave them the experience of leadership and the opportunity to meet leaders of this work. Going to previously inaccessible places expands their personal worldviews.

Long-Term Impact

Connecting our students to local changemakers allows them to hear personal stories from other African leaders who have positively impacted their communities in innovative and creative ways. Seeing themselves reflected in community leaders demonstrates how their work matters and ripples into a larger social impact outside the communities they know. Long-term we want our local Ghanaian board to take over leadership fully. Investing in student changemakers now creates leaders for the future.
