Challenge

The demand for skilled labor is high in male-dominated fields like construction. Women's viability in the labor market continues to diminish causing growing rates of poverty and income inequality. With less than 6% representation of the over 2 million employed in construction sector, women continue to be significantly underrepresented in the primary sector such as construction Industry. This project will affect over 100,000 girls in Lagos urban slums to aspire for a new start in life.

Solution

Centre for Community Empowerment and Sustainable Development (CESDEV) will encourage, support and provide training in life skills, micro-entrepreneurship and vocational technical skills in carpentry, electrical works, tiling, masonry, plumbing and painting to targeted low-income girls from urban slums in Lagos State. By supporting more cohorts of women in apprenticeship programs, employers will have more trained women candidates to hire.

Long-Term Impact

The Project will train 30 low-income girls, encouraging and supporting them look past gender stereotypes to seize opportunities through vocational and technical training; allowing them rise out of poverty and increase household incomes, which will provide for their families' well-being
