Summary

This project offers camp training on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) rights, feminine hygiene and leadership skills to vulnerable adolescent girls and young women, mostly victims of teenage pregnancy, early marriage and sexual violence in rural Kenya. It also organizes football tournaments to promote their self esteem and leadership ability and are offered free healthcare items and services e.g. HIV testing, cervical cancer screening, family planning, condoms and sanitary towels

Challenge

Adolescent girls in rural western Kenya face underlying community challenges of gender discrimination, sexual violence and poverty. At least one-third of these girls do not live to realize their full potential but make desperate social, economic and livelihood choices as they quickly become young adults. Teenage pregnancy, early marriage and sexual violence (rape), Female Genital Mutilation lower girls' self esteem and create a vicious cycle of obstacles to development in their societies.

Solution

Training on Sexual Reproductive Health Rights, playing soccer and sharing success stories is of great value to vulnerable or affected girls. It breaks gender stereotypes, makes them rediscover themselves, raises their self esteem and ability to take leadership in society. The project will create girl champions and role models in the society. The tournament will promote healthcare access, and strengthen healthy social networks within peers. Start up businesses will ensure their economic freedom

Long-Term Impact

More girls will get empowered and educated and hence take leadership roles to inspire others and influence community norms. Women champions will be advocates for their Sexual Reproductive Health rights. There will be increased economic freedom for (married) women and hence their decision making power. Women will take their kids to school and take care of their health and that of their children. Women will realize their full potential in contributing to the development of the society.
