Support Healthcare for Women and Children in Syria

Thanks to your generous contributions, premature babies like Ghassan are receiving the urgent medical care they need to survive their most critical first days.

Ghassan had completed only 30 weeks in his mother’s womb when he was unexpectedly born at home. Weighing just 1,350 grams, he entered the world far too early and immediately faced challenges greater than his tiny body could endure alone.

Because his umbilical cord was cut without proper sterilization, Ghassan developed a serious blood infection. By the time he arrived from the Jabal Al-Zawiya area at one of SEMA’s hospitals in northern Syria, he was also suffering from dangerously low blood sugar levels.

The medical team responded immediately.

Doctors established an umbilical venous line to correct his blood sugar, placed him on CPAP respiratory support, and began broad-spectrum antibiotics to fight the infection. He was also fed his mother’s milk through a gastric tube, providing the essential nutrition and immune support his fragile body needed.

Ghassan spent 25 days in the neonatal intensive care unit, receiving continuous monitoring and specialized treatment. With dedicated medical care—and with the support made possible by donors like you—his condition gradually improved, and the blood infection was brought under control.

After overcoming the most dangerous stage, Ghassan was transferred to the incubator unit to begin the next part of his journey: growing stronger and gaining weight.

His weight has now increased to 1,650 grams, and he is approaching 1,700 grams—a vital milestone that brings him closer to leaving the hospital and returning safely to his family’s arms.

Alongside Ghassan’s treatment, the medical team continues to guide and train his parents on proper feeding and breastfeeding techniques, helping them prepare to care for him safely and confidently after discharge.

With support from SEMA, the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Ariha Women and Children’s Hospital continues to provide around-the-clock medical care for newborn babies who need intensive and immediate treatment.

The unit is equipped with 6 incubators, supported by 4 ventilators and 4 CPAP machines, helping medical teams care for premature babies and critical newborn cases with the attention and support they need to survive and recover.

This vital department serves families in Ariha city, its surrounding countryside, and the Jabal Al-Zawiya area, bringing specialized neonatal care closer to communities that would otherwise struggle to access it.

For many families, this means their newborns can receive urgent intensive care without being transferred long distances. It also helps reduce the heavy financial burden on parents who are already facing displacement, poverty, and hardship.
