Support Human Rights Activists in Syria

Summary

The Syria Justice and Accountability Centre relies on a network of documenters and activists across Syria and refugee communities who work with survivors and their families to record the details of their experiences. This documentation work is extremely challenging and highly technical, and documenters need customized, Arabic language trainings to gain the skills necessary to collect detailed documentation that can be used as criminal evidence and help survivors achieve their vision of justice.

Challenge

Their work requires an understanding of international humanitarian law, human rights standards, and the principles of do no harm. This knowledge helps documenters identify serious crimes and ask targeted questions that will allow human rights investigators to seek justice. Few activists in Syria have all the skills necessary to collect high-quality documentation, and it is vital that they have access to a centralized location where in-depth information and live assistance is available.

Solution

With your support, we will be able to increase live training sessions with Syrian activists and develop new courses in response to the everchanging needs of our partners in the field. Examples of potential trainings include: "Documenting Violations Against Children," "Interviewing Insider Witnesses," "Documenting the Targeting of Medical Facilities," and "Recording Information Related to Forced Displacement."

Long-Term Impact

This project will train activists to document and preserve violations happening throughout Syria, giving a voice to victims of human rights abuses and their families. By ensuring that high quality testimonies from diverse survivors of the conflict are collected, SJAC and its partners will have the evidence they need to pursue comprehensive justice for all Syrians.

Additional Documentation

This project has provided additional documentation in a PDF file (projdoc.pdf).
