The "Supporting Human Rights Education through Theatres" project in Pakistan aims to educate communities on fundamental rights through interactive theatre performances. By leveraging storytelling, the project raises awareness about issues such as gender equality, freedom of expression, and minority rights. It engages marginalized groups, particularly youth and women, empowering them to advocate for their rights. Theatre serves as an engaging and accessible tool to spark discussions and actions.
Pakistani women living in rural areas are particularly vulnerable to violence because of their relatively weaker social position and lack of awareness about their legal rights. Domestic violence is significantly associated with poor mental and reproductive health. To address these issues, AWARD has developed a theater team that can go to rural areas and perform interactive theater to sensitize the masses (especially women) about human rights violations and the actions to take.
The project will sensitize the masses, as street theater is one of the most effective tools to reach the target communities and has been proven quite beneficial for spreading human rights education. The street theater will also give ways on how and who to reach and report any violations. It will provide women with the opportunity to learn about their rights and to improve their domestic , social and economic situation.
1) Situation of Human rights improved in rural areas in Pakistan, 2) Rural women sensitized on their rights and improving their domestic situation. 3) More empowerment among women and girls and more inclusion in different sectors. 4) Reduction of the gender gap through improvement of the human rights situation 5) Interactive Theatre will lead more people to get engaged to their rights.
