By Matthew Dayton-Welch and Wendy Whiting Blome | Project Leaders
During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from food and water from dawn until sunset as a time of reflection and sacrifice. The breaking of the fast at the end of the day is called Iftar. This year Ramadan began March 22 and ended April 21 with the Eid al Fitr. The Spafford Children’s Center hosted an Iftar meal for 70 children and family members on April 6. The celebration included music, a dancing panda bear, art projects for the children, and, of course, a nutritious buffet at sundown.
At SCC there were also Easter greetings and drawings in April and, last December, the children enjoyed a Christmas party complete with tree decorating, a rather skinny Santa, and gifts to take home. Since our beginning in 1925, SCC has offered a safe place for children and families to observe the faith traditions that are important to them.
For Palestinians, childhood is often a time of tension, anxiety, and uncertainty. The SCC offers an antidote with educational, therapeutic, and recreational services that you, our faithful donors, help support. We are grateful for, and dependent on, your continued generosity.
Sincerely,
