Supporting Mothers in East Jerusalem

By Matthew Dayton-Welch & Wendy Whiting Blome | Project Leaders

Within the historic stone walls of the Terra Sancta Museum in the Old City of Jerusalem, mothers from the Spafford Children's Center (SCC) met to share their stories and apply their talents to clay and paint. With exercises to release stress led by the SCC’s own trauma specialist, Yazan, the women found a safe space to foster resilience and strength. SCC is part of a community initiative to bring organizations of the Old City together to support each other and the needs of Palestinians in Jerusalem. The museum’s archeological collections added a timeless ambiance to this healing gathering for two days in the end of December 2023.

The SCC psychodrama and art therapy sessions were designed to give the women an opportunity to talk about the tension in their lives as they raise their children in a conflict-affected area where every trip out of their homes can be difficult due to demonstrators, police actions, and harassment of Palestinians. These mothers, like all mothers, want their children to be safe and happy with educational opportunities that will allow them to meet their potential. In groups organized by SCC they find empowerment that helps them navigate their days.

The American Friends of the Spafford Children's Center needs your help now to maintain the vital trauma treatment and educational programs of the SCC. Please give as generously as you can through GlobalGiving at https://goto.gg/31839.

We thank you for your support and pray for peace for all in the region.
