The Spafford Children's Center (SCC) is known in East Jerusalem for its expertise in early childhood development (ECD), and its services in response to the effects of trauma on learning. Specialists from SCC went to the Villa Kids Kindergarten to provide ECD workshops for the teachers, and to demonstrate their techniques with the children. Working as teams, the children passed balls over their heads accompanied by gales of giggles. SCC trauma specialist, Yazan, engaged the children in coordination games to improve motor skills.
In another initiative, at each of three schools, SCC presented training activities for educators and their students who have experienced trauma. A total of 200 students and 50 teachers participated. The SCC speech therapist, Aya, occupational therapist, Abeer, social worker, Raneen, and trauma specialist, Yazan, conducted meetings with the schools to emphasize the importance of recognizing the effect of trauma on behavior, learning processes, and emotional development. A referral mechanism was established to ensure that children in need can access trauma treatment and other services from SCC.
On International Women's Day, March 8, SCC celebrated the contributions of women by presenting each woman with a lovely flower. During this time of unease and turbulence in East Jerusalem, SCC honored the women who support children, strengthen communities, and are employed in many fields. SCC salutes the strength and perseverance of Palestinian women.
