Children living in extreme poverty in Nigeria lack access to nutritious meals and healthcare. This project targets vulnerable and malnourished Nigerian children and provides access to nutrition and healthcare. Kinnect plans to accomplish this by providing 125 malnourished children with Ready-to-Use Therapeutics and Food and healthcare services. Without this project, children in this targeted low-income communities of Lagos will continue to suffer and die from malnutrition and preventable illness
86 million people live in extreme poverty in Nigeria (UNDP, 2018). Many children living in the slums of Lagos face challenges accessing nutritious meals and adequate healthcare. Without access to adequate meals and healthcare, these children are unable to reach their full physical and mental capabilities, and further become vulnerable to preventable illnesses that affect their development. Many of these children will die from diseases and those that survive will become liabilities to society.
The goal is to improve the health outcomes of 125 children in a low-income community in Lagos by providing nutrition through Ready-to-Use-Therapeutic Foods and access to healthcare. The project will also conduct community advocacy and nutrition education to educate parents on the importance of nutritious meals including accessible and affordable meal options, and the benefits for their children. The project will partner with a local clinic, to ensure there is monitoring of the targeted children.
Through this project, we hope to see a decrease in malnourishment and mortality within the local community. Children with improved health grow up to be healthy adults with higher life expectancies, thus directly leading to higher incomes and at a population level, would impact economic growth and development in Nigeria. As such, an investment in the health and nutrition of children in Nigeria is a direct investment in the future and development of Nigeria.
