We're happy to report that the Holy Innocents Children's Hospital Mbarara's Surgical Center opened its doors and began performing surgeries in January, 2019! The surgical center project started in 2015 when Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni made his first official visit to Holy Innocents Children's Hospital and laid the cornerstone for construction of the surgical center. In October 2015 Archbishop Paul Bakyenga of Mbarara archdiocese blessed the groundbreaking ceremony and construction began.
Subject: Want to help with the first children's hospital in Uganda? In Uganda, 1 child in 7 dies before age 5. In Mbarara District alone, 13,000 children under 5 die every year - thousands more ages 6 to 12. That's like a jumbo jet full of children crashing every week. Over 60% of these children die from malaria, respiratory infection and dysentery. These diseases are eminently treatable. Children can be saved if hospitalization and treatment is available.
Holy Innocents Children's Hospital has been self-supporting operationally since 2012. However, the hospital and surgical center need additional resources to acquire medical and surgical equipment and expand onsite housing for doctors, nurses and staff. Holy Innocents is spreading the word about this effort, to generate awareness and funding. Would you take a few minutes to look at their website, www.holyinnocentsuganda.org?
The hospital is owned and run by the Catholic Diocese of Mbarara, which has an established track record of over 50 years for designing, building and operating hospitals and clinics. Since opening in 2009, the hospital has treated tens of thousands of children with life-threatening illnesses and has treated hundreds of thousands of children for less serious illnesses. I'd like to ask you to share this message with your family, friends and colleagues. Thanks so much for your help!
