RecyclesPay project goal is to make education affordable and accessible to children in low income schools, & to save plastics from polluting our communities & oceans. We partner with low income schools in Lagos to organize recycling of bottles & other plastics. Donors match the recycling proceeds, so every family that collects 100 kg plastics will have that semester school fees paid. To do this for 1000 students for 1 year, requires $42,000 donations. Our country is ranked as having the highest number of out of school children in the world. We have stories of children in low income communities not being able to attend schools because they can not afford to pay their school fees. Also, because of lack of formal waste collection and recycling opportunities in these areas, plastic waste litters everywhere, especially our waterways which lead to the ocean.
We partner with low income schools to help parents cover their child's tuition fees, and help remove plastics. For every 100kg of plastics turned in, we will be able to pay an average one semester worth of tuition if donors provide $14 matching contribution. This way, kids stay in school and plastic stays out of the streets and oceans. Without the donation, we would need to require double the amount of plastics which is too difficult for most families. Currently, Recyclespay is in 16 schools!!!
Our short term goal is to pay at least 1000 children's tuition for one year and recycle over 300,000 kg of plastics. Our long term impact is that by 2030, over 10,000 children will have been supported to graduate instead of dropping out of school, and over ten million kgs of plastic waste will have been recycled. The outcome will be a new generation of environmentally responsible people who understand the benefits of quality education and a safe and healthy environment.
