This project will provide mobility aids, assistive devices, legal aid, and community support to 500 persons with disabilities in Nigeria. Over 27 million Nigerians live with a disability, but most lack access to basic tools, services, or protection from abuse. We will distribute aids like wheelchairs and white canes, support disability rights awareness in local communities, and assist persons with disabilities in navigating public services and securing fair treatment.
Persons with disabilities in Nigeria often face neglect, limited access to mobility aids, and few options for legal or health support. Many live in isolation, face abuse, or are excluded from schools and jobs. Families and caregivers often do not know how to care for them. Without tools like wheelchairs or walking canes, mobility and independence are difficult. Laws exist, but few know how to apply them or get help when rights are violated.
We will identify persons with disabilities in rural and urban low-income areas and provide them with assistive devices and care kits. Legal support will be available through a mobile legal aid unit. Volunteers will be trained to act as community guides and assist in navigating public services. Flyers and town hall sessions will share facts about disability rights and help people with disabilities speak up and get the help they need.
More people with disabilities will be able to move freely, care for themselves, and access services without fear. Legal support will help reduce abuse and neglect. Communities that take part in awareness sessions will begin to include people with disabilities in school, work, and family life. Volunteers and trained caregivers will continue to support their neighbours beyond the life of this project.
