People with Disabilities Lack Tools/Legal Supports

By Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

We sincerely thank the donors who have shown support for the Support Rights of African People with Disabilities project. Your concern for persons living with disabilities is greatly appreciated. At this time, however, the funds received are still too limited for the planned distribution of assistive devices and support services to begin.

Across Nigeria, millions of people live with physical, visual, or other disabilities, yet many lack access to basic tools that would allow them to move safely and live with greater independence. Wheelchairs, white canes, and other assistive items remain out of reach for many families who cannot afford them. As a result, individuals with disabilities often remain confined to their homes or depend heavily on relatives for simple daily activities.

In addition to mobility challenges, many persons with disabilities face discrimination, neglect, and abuse. Although laws exist to protect their rights, few people know how to seek help or report violations. Families and caregivers also lack guidance on how best to support loved ones living with disabilities.

This project plans to identify 500 persons with disabilities in both rural and low income urban communities and provide assistive devices such as wheelchairs and white canes. Care kits and mobility support will help beneficiaries move more freely and carry out daily activities.

A mobile legal aid service will also assist individuals who face discrimination or abuse. Volunteers will receive training to act as community guides who help people with disabilities understand available services and access public support systems. Awareness meetings and printed information materials will also be shared within communities so that families and local leaders better understand disability rights.

When persons with disabilities gain mobility tools and legal support, they are better able to participate in education, work, and community life. Greater awareness within communities can also reduce stigma and promote respect for their rights and dignity.

We are thankful for the encouragement already shown by donors who believe in this cause. With further support, this project will be able to begin providing the tools and assistance needed to improve the lives of many persons living with disabilities.

Sincerely,

Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri
