We Met the Children. We Saw the Water They Drink.

By JACKSON AMEH | Project Leader

Last month, our GoGreen team travelled to Ortese in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State to meet families rebuilding their lives after years of conflict. Nothing prepared us for what we witnessed.

As we listened to parents, teachers, and community leaders, one message came through with heartbreaking clarity: safe drinking water has become one of their greatest daily struggles.

Children showed us the streams where they collect water for drinking, cooking, and washing. These are the same streams that have become increasingly polluted following weeks of heavy rainfall and severe flooding across Benue State. Floodwaters have carried mud, waste, and other contaminants into already unsafe water sources, leaving families with few alternatives.

Every cup of water now carries uncertainty. Community members told us about children suffering repeated bouts of diarrhoea and other water-related illnesses. Parents spoke of missed school days, rising medical expenses, and the fear that another rainy season could make an already difficult situation even worse.

No parent should have to wonder whether the water their child drinks will make them sick. This is why we are asking for your help. Your support will enable GoGreen to provide safe and reliable water systems, promote hygiene education, and help establish community-led management that will protect these water sources for years to come.

For the children of Ortese, clean water is more than a basic necessity—it is the foundation for good health, education, dignity, and hope. Today, you can help turn concern into action. Please donate through GlobalGiving and help bring safe drinking water to the children and families of Ortese. Together, we can replace unsafe streams with clean water and give an entire community the opportunity to rebuild with confidence.
