Summary

After the ISIS attacks on the Yazidi community in Sinjar in 2014, our co-founders decided to become a source of support for their community. They launched the NGO Sunrise, which has been serving communities since 2014, mainly focusing on children. As infrastructure is still lacking, Sunrise seeks private donations to rehabilitate child-friendly spaces and provide educational services to children aged 4 to 13. This will enable children to access safe educational spaces and materials.

Challenge

After the attacks of ISIS in Iraq, the region of Sinjar is struggling to rebuild itself. The United Nations declared that key infrastructure and basic services such as education are still missing. Sunrise has focused primarily on serving children and providing them with educational spaces since 2014. As thousands of children in the province lack access to safe facilities and trained staff, we want to bridge this gap and ensure that children from all backgrounds have access to a safe space.

Solution

By rehabilitating community spaces into educational venues and by providing training to educational staff, Sunrise will bridge this documented gap. We will use our ten years of experience serving children in the community and working on education to ensure that these spaces are safe and efficient and provide children with materials for education, spaces for recreation, and trained educators to teach and guide them. Children aged 4 to 13 will benefit and we aim to support 200 children in total.

Long-Term Impact

By providing children with safe spaces, we are providing them with an education, a space to safely be a child, and an escape from the trauma they endured since the war. We are also preventing children from engaging in child labor and early marriage, which is a reality that exposes children to significant abuse and violence. Sunrise wants to make sure that children in our community are not exposed to such violence and are provided with a safe environment to thrive and have a better future.
