Sunrise's ongoing safe space in Gerzarik, southern Sinjar. We are pleased to share the story of one of our female participants. Her father was martyred by ISIS in Gerzarik, and she grew up never knowing what it feels like to have a father. She often looked at other children and wondered why they had fathers while she did not. She repeatedly asked her mother, “Where is my father?”
Her participation in the safe space activities helped her make friends, receive attention from teachers, and learn the Arabic alphabet. Through play, learning, and social connection, she became happier and more confident. Over time, she asked her mother fewer painful questions, as her focus shifted toward learning new things and being surrounded by friends and supportive teachers.
This is one of the many moving stories that show the impact of providing safe, nurturing spaces for children in Sinjar.
In conclusion, every child in Sinjar carries a story of pain and destruction, but also a story of resilience, love for life, struggle, and the ongoing injustice caused by powerful authorities.
