Summary

This project will work to support and establish 50 Self-Help Groups to empower 1,000 vulnerable women in Ethiopia. The foundation of the Self-Help Groups is the belief that women have the power to address needs in their community when equipped with knowledge and expertise. Within the groups, the women gain self-esteem and confidence to change their situations through saving and training. They gain skills in business development, prepare a business plan and become skilled in financial management.

Challenge

Poverty is a major problem within Ethiopia, which contributes to family stress and breakdown which when combined with peer pressure and community attitudes that view children as economic assets for the family to generate income and survive. Sadly, this leads many children to exploitative situations, creates an environment highly conducive to child exploitation.

Solution

We seek to address the link between child abuse and economic poverty in Ethiopia by setting up and supporting Self-Help Groups for women, which will empower families to improve their livelihood and come out of poverty. In addition, because poverty also has a social impact, we work to empower the women in the Self-Help Groups though training on effective parenting skills, gender quality, and child exploitation.

Long-Term Impact

A core part of our approach is to prevent individuals and communities from being exposed to abuse, exploitation and modern slavery in the first place. Therefore, Self-Help Groups are key to preventing modern slavery, by combating poverty, which leads to vulnerability. By creating communities that gain confidence and are self-sustaining we are able to create meaningful long-term change to end modern slavery. In 2018, we had over 100 Self-Help Groups with an average of 20 women in each group.
