Support Self-Help Groups for Women in Ethiopia

Hope for Justice’s Self-Help Groups continue to make an incredibly positive impact on the lives of vulnerable women in Ethiopia. In a country where it is estimated that 727,000 people are currently trapped in exploitation (Global Slavery Index, 2023), the economic and social empowerment of vulnerable households is vital to prevent child trafficking.

The story below comes from one of our Ethiopian Self-Help Groups (SHGs):

Twenty women organized one SHGs in Wolaita region, located in the south of Ethiopia. They are making a great effort to improve the economy of their families and overcome financial hardships by engaging in various income generating activities in a sustainable way. In the process to participate in group income generating activities, they bought three goats from their local town and are now raising them for more profit and to strengthen their capital.

Even though their economic level is low, they learned how to save money from the limited resources they have. Moreover, they gladly shared with our team in Ethiopia that their efforts are contributing to prevent their children from being exposed to trafficking and modern slavery.

Similarly, the members a SHG located in Offa, also in the south of Ethiopia, recently purchased half of a cassava farm from a landowner to generate more income for their group and build economic capacity.
