She was told her future had already been decided.
When Charity turned 15, she stopped dreaming about becoming a nurse. Not because she lacked intelligence or determination, but because everyone around her had already decided what her future would be. She would leave school. She would marry early. She would become a wife before she had the chance to become the woman she dreamed of being.
Sadly, Charity's story is not unique. Across Nigeria, millions of girls face the devastating consequences of child marriage, gender-based violence, and limited access to accurate sexual and reproductive health information. Nigeria has the third-highest number of child brides in the world, with approximately 22 million women married before the age of 18. In Benue State alone, UNFPA estimates that 12.3% of these child marriages occur, while years of conflict and displacement have made girls even more vulnerable to violence, exploitation, and abuse.
Behind every statistic is a young girl whose future is quietly slipping away. Many never learn that they have rights. Many never discover that violence is never acceptable. Many are never given the confidence to say, "My life matters."
At GoGreen, we believe every girl deserves the opportunity to make informed decisions about her body, her education, and her future. Through our Support Sexual Health Rights for Women and Girls project, we will empower 400 women, girls, and young people in conflict-affected communities across Benue State with age-appropriate sexual and reproductive health education, peer support, community dialogues, and safe spaces where they can learn, ask questions without fear, and speak out against harmful practices.
But we cannot do it alone. Your support can help a girl remain in school instead of becoming a child bride. It can give a survivor the courage to seek help. It can equip parents and community leaders with the knowledge to protect—not silence—their daughters. Most importantly, it can help ensure that another young girl is not told her future has already been decided.
Today, you have the opportunity to rewrite that story. Please join GoGreen in giving vulnerable girls something that every child deserves: the freedom to dream, the confidence to choose, and the opportunity to build the future they want.
Because no girl's future should be decided by violence, fear, or harmful traditions. It should be written by hope.
