Supporting young girls in Kalemie through economic empowerment
As per now, we are running two main projects in Kalemie looking at economic empowerment of most vulnerable communities mainly IDPs, Refugees, and host communities. The target group is generally women and young girls who make more than 80%.
Aid relief has almost disappeared yet communities are highly affected, in this we have perceived at as an opportunity to advance our convictions for projects that focus on durable solutions through economic empowerment. Poverty is key in all our humanitarian interventions yet the Democratic Republic of Congo has better economic opportunities to the affected communities which need to be explored.
Village Credit and Loan Associations
We have in place now 13 Village Credits and Loans Associations which brings together 25 people each. Here members learn about financial literacy, entrepreneurship, business management, they also do the savings and give loans among themselves.
This is also a better place to engage them on issues about their rights, leadership and community participation among others.
The main challenge remains the lack of funds to support all these groups and to effectively continue the trainings of their members.
Farming Project
We have managed to acquire a land which is being used to promote agriculture to IDP women and those from the host communities. So far 40 women are involved in order to promote climate change resilience agriculture.
Activities include training, peace building and bringing people together through this common land and produce crops which can help them to survive, eat and earn money.
The challenge is also the lack of funds in order help people acquire land, seeds, technical human resource and other expenses related to the projects.
