Challenge

As the Syrian refugee crisis enters into its fifth year, millions of refugees continue to seek safety and dignified lives in Jordan and Lebanon. Most refugees have little to no source of sustainable income and many struggle to support themselves and their families. Their savings have been depleted, pushing them into increasingly impoverished neighborhoods and risky coping strategies, incurring debt and engaging in exploitative work.

Solution

NEF will help Syrian and Iraqi refugees and vulnerable members of their host communities in Jordan and Lebanon to build their economic resilience through skills trainings , financial literacy, conflict management, and social networking. With a focus on women and adolescent girls, NEF's aim over the next two years is to help at least 5,000 Syrian, Lebanese, and Jordanian families restore their livelihoods and achieve some degree of economic stability to meet their own needs with dignity.

Long-Term Impact

Our approach ensures long-term sustainability by building the ability to adopt positive coping strategies through the: (1) creation of economic opportunity to generate a sustainable income over the long-term; (2) development of networks to expand social resources and provide peer-to-peer support for women and adolescents; (3) development of financial literacy and transferable life skills and (4) creation of savings and saving habits to protect against shocks and stabilize cash flow.
