Project Overview

The project ‘Support 550 Displaced Girl Children Back to School’ aimed to address the needs of displaced girl children affected by conflict, natural disasters, banditry, and challenging circumstances in Abuja, Nigeria. The primary objective was to ensure access to both nutritious meals and quality education for these girls, empowering them to thrive and build a better future.

Project Achievements and Activities:

Identification and Enrollment: Through extensive outreach efforts, we identified 550 displaced girl children who were facing food insecurity and lacked access to education, out of which 85 of them were enrolled in Durumi Junior Secondary School, Abuja, Nigeria. Collaboration with local partners like Rotary Club, Lugbe Chapter, Jumia Food, and community organizations played a crucial role in effectively identifying and including these girls in the project.

Nutritious Meals: We provided daily nutritious meals to all the enrolled girls, ensuring they received essential nourishment for their physical and cognitive development. The meals were carefully planned to meet their dietary requirements and promote healthy growth.

Educational Support: In addition to meals, we facilitated access to quality education by providing educational materials, including textbooks, stationery, and school uniforms. Removing financial barriers, we enabled these girls to fully engage in the learning process.

School Fees and Transportation: We covered non-tuition fees for the duration of the project, covering a full school calendar year (3 terms), ensuring that financial constraints did not hinder their education. To address transportation challenges, we arranged safe and reliable transportation for those who had to travel long distances to reach school.

Project Impact:

Improved Nutrition: Through the provision of nutritious meals like beans porridge, beans cake, local cereal, yams, bread, rice, and seasonal fruits we ensured that all 550 displaced girl children received adequate nourishment, promoting their overall health and well-being.

Enhanced Education Access: By addressing financial barriers and providing educational materials, we empowered the girls to enroll in and actively participate in their education. Their access to quality education has increased significantly.

Empowerment and Skill Development: The project fostered empowerment and skill development among the girls. They gained confidence, developed life skills, and expanded their knowledge, enabling them to overcome challenges and pursue their aspirations.

Long-term Impact: By investing in the nutrition and education of these 550 displaced girl children, we have contributed to breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering future generations. The impact extends beyond the immediate beneficiaries, positively influencing families, communities, and society.

Challenges Faced:

Limited Resources: Acquiring sufficient resources to provide nutritious meals and educational support for all 550 girls posed a challenge. However, through the generosity of donors and effective resource management, we successfully overcame this hurdle.

Overcoming Barriers: Addressing cultural and logistical barriers to education and nutrition required community engagement, awareness campaigns, and advocacy efforts. These initiatives were essential in creating an enabling environment for the project's success.

Lessons Learned:

Collaborative Partnerships: Building strong partnerships with local organizations, international organizations like GlobalGiving, schools, and community leaders are crucial for project success and sustainability.

Holistic Approach: Combining nutritious meals with educational opportunities creates a more comprehensive and impactful intervention for the girls.

Moving Forward:

While the project has achieved significant milestones, there is more progress to be made. We remain committed to advocating for the rights of displaced girl children, expanding our reach, and exploring innovative approaches to ensure their continued access to nutritious meals and education.

We extend sincere appreciation to all our donors, volunteers, and supporters who made this project possible. Together, we are transforming lives and creating a brighter future for these 550 displaced girl children.
