A Report on Our Back To School Initiative

By Bilikisu Lawal | Food & Community Engagement Officer

Introduction

In response to the ongoing challenges faced by displaced children in our community, No Hunger Food Bank initiated the "Support 550 Displaced Girl Children Back to School" program. This report outlines the objectives, activities, outcomes, and conclusion based on our efforts to empower these young girls through education.

Objectives

The primary goals of the program were to:

Promote Nutritional Support: Provide nutritional meals and food packages to support the health and well-being of the students.

Provide Educational Resources: Supply school supplies, uniforms, and necessary materials to 550 displaced girl children.

Facilitate Enrollment: Assist in the enrollment process to ensure these children can attend school without barriers.

Promote Awareness: Raise awareness about the importance of education for girls, especially in times of crisis.

Activities

Needs Assessment: Conducted surveys in local communities to identify displaced girl children in need of support.

Resource Procurement: Secured donations and funds to purchase food, educational materials, uniforms, and hygiene kits.

Enrollment Assistance: Collaborated with local schools to facilitate the enrollment of the identified children.

Community Workshops: Organized workshops to educate parents and guardians about the importance of supporting their daughters' education.

Follow-Up Support: Established a follow-up mechanism to monitor the progress of the children in school.

Outcomes

The program successfully achieved its objectives, resulting in the following outcomes:

- Enrollment: 258 displaced girl children were enrolled in local schools.

  • Supplies Provided: All enrolled girls received school supplies, uniforms, and access to daily nutritious meals.
  • Counseling Impact: Over 250 girls participated in counseling sessions, reporting improved emotional well-being, coping skills, and motivation to stay in school.

- Increased Awareness: Conducted workshops attended by over 300 community members, raising awareness about the importance of education for girls.

- Positive Feedback: Received heartfelt testimonials from parents and teachers about the impact of the program on the children's morale and academic performance.

Challenges

While the program was largely successful, some challenges were encountered:

Funding Constraints: The program has been significantly impacted by cuts in global aid, particularly from international donors. These funding reductions have made it increasingly difficult to sustain our efforts and expand our reach.

Logistical Issues: Difficulty in reaching some remote areas for resource distribution.

Cultural Barriers: Resistance in some communities regarding girls' education, which required additional outreach efforts.

Conclusion

The "Support 550 Displaced Girl Children Back to School" program has made a significant difference in the lives of many young girls and their families. We are grateful for the support from GlobalGiving, which has been instrumental in making this initiative possible. Together, we can continue to empower these children and ensure they have the opportunity to pursue their education and dreams.

Thank you for your continued support.
