The children's home "Home iNAMi" was set up in 2016 with three children in a backyard silver check located in the former township Katutura. Over the last years it has grown into 17 children aged one to eighteen years. In 2019 we were fortunate enough to buy a proper house big enough to accommodate everyone and turned it into a safe home. Furthermore, we built two classrooms to open a kindergarten/ afternoon care, we renovated the house and extended it & built a vegetable garden & chicken coop.
Namibia has an alarming high number (200.000 in 2017 USAID) of children in need of care. Most of the children who live at Home iNAMi are OVC's (Orphans And Vulnerable Children), a few of them suffer from the fetal alcohol syndrome which results in them needing special care in their everyday life. These children have experienced traumatic events in their early childhood or have been rejected by their families or society. The consequences for a child who was abandoned by a parent can be huge.
Home iNAMi offers a place of protection and a plan for raising each child towards maturity and their independence. Access to education, tertiary studies and skills development are offered to each child to enable them to become independent and positive role players within their respective communities. Furthermore, It is very important to us to not only provide a safe home, healthy nutrition & education, but also psychological support to "heal" from trauma & abuse during their early childhood.
The currently 17 residential beneficiaries will be empowered with life sustaining skills which will automatically positively influence other community members. Each child is given the opportunity to attend a school that will support them & provide them with the education they need to live an independent life & to not fall back into poverty. In addition, we have been able to hire five Namibians since 2018. As we continue to grow, we look forward to supporting even more people in the community.
