Since December 2025 AMV has been meeting with a group of Commercial Sex Workers in Kitale one afternoon a week. Since the USAID cuts the women have received less support than they used to get in terms of access to counselling and distribution of condoms and lubricants. Our counsellor and facilitator provide a safe place for the women to meet & share their experiences over a meal. Our project looks to see how it can assist these women in various ways including looking at other livelihood options.
Female sex workers in Kitale, Kenya have lost access to essential health and support services following recent funding cuts to HIV prevention programs. Many can no longer obtain condoms, lubricants or counselling services. Without these resources they face increased risks of HIV/STIs, violence, poverty and isolation. Many also lack opportunities to develop alternative livelihoods or financial resilience.
This project will provide weekly safe-space meetings offering HIV counselling and testing referrals, meals and peer support for sex workers in Kitale. It will distribute condoms and lubricants to reduce health risks. The project will also train women in table banking, small business management and Savings and Loans (SILC), helping them build income, savings and safer livelihood options.
Over time, this project will help sex workers in Kitale improve their health, safety and financial stability. Regular access to prevention resources and counselling will reduce HIV and STI risks. Through table banking, SILC savings groups and small business training, women will build income and support networks. This will strengthen resilience, reduce dependence on sex work for survival and create pathways to more secure livelihoods.
