Our Sewing Centre helps keep us safe

By Divya Devi | Village Leader

Women together
Women together

Hello everyone,

Time for an update, and this time we asked a village council member to tell us about the impact of the women’s sewing centre in the village. It is based on an interview in Hindi but it has not been edited.

My name is Divya and I am one of the members of the village council. The first women ever.

Our village is isolated, very poor and comprises of mainly poor lower caste subsistence farmers or daily wage labourers. Many huts are made only of mud with straw for a roof.

The sewing centre enables women to meet and learn a skill in a supportive environment, this you probably know this but it does more than this.   It helps keep the village women safe. You perhaps know our government here banned alcohol recently, the women were generally happy at first. But the ban is a scam, alcohol is freely available on the black market everywhere and there has been a huge increase in violent crime especially towards women including rapes of minors (children) where items such as guns have been inserted in private parts. Not in this village but in this area.

The sewing centre is a real force for women here, they are united together and will not hesitate to report any bad behaviour from men towards the women to the authorities. If they dare touch one of us badly all women will respond and make sure they are punished.

I want to thank all of you who have helped the centre helping women in many ways but above all helping to keep them safe.

Divya Devi
