My name is Champa
I am a member of my village sewing centre which has five machines and 30 women and girls.
My village is very isolated away from the main road. I have never been out of Bihar although I go to the local market some 8km away once a week to try and sell some goats or children’s clothes and buy some vegetables.
I do not know my true age, I think about 25 years of age. I have four children two girls and two boys.
My husband works as a daily wage earner. On a good day, he can earn as much as 400 rupees (note about $6.50 cents a day or 5 GBP) But often he cannot find work.
So, I want to tell you all that owning my own sewing machine and being able to make clothes for my children or maybe make one or two items to sell at the local market is so very important to me and my family. Having these skills is so much help. But of course, even those like myself who have reached proficiency continue to go the centre for friendship support and when we stand together if one of us has been abused or mistreated for protection also.
Thank you so much for your help for us.
Namaste to you all
Champa
