Summary

Your donation will support the informal sector workers and vulnerable families who are the worst hit by COVID-19 and the resulting lockdowns, which causes loss of income. By providing food and soup vouchers administered by local churches, the project will ensure that such families can feed the families and maintain hygiene.

Challenge

Mozambique is among the countries with the highest rate of people working in the informal economy, with nine out of 10 workers, living oftentimes in extreme vulnerability. The quarantine imposed on the local population to reduce the spread of Coronavirus means that many street vendors, artisans and other autonomous workers remain without income to feed their families.

Solution

The project will provide free food and soap vouchers from Recheio, a local network of "cash and carry" grocery shops, which will handed over by the local churches and missionaries in Maputo and Pemba, after having identified the families most in need. The vouchers bought at discounted rate thanks to a partnership with Recheio will ofset the loss of income linked to the quarantine, and ensuring nutrition and hygene is maintained at this critical juncture.

Long-Term Impact

Our support do not only provide short term help to vulnerable families at the time they need it the most, enabling them to surpive from poverty and hinger, but it woudl als contribute to more prevention from Covid-19 in sustainable manner, as the beneficiaries would not have to scramble for food and maintain the recommended social distance.
