Provide Emergency Support for Vulnerable Persons.

The activities of “THE REMOTE COMMUNITIES HEALTH PROMOTION PROJECT” funded by the GlobalGiving crowdfunding platform continued through the month of July. The CHWs continued with community engagement by providing primary healthcare services to the most vulnerable population in Kitta. The community was engaged through planned project activities namely, treatment of simple malaria, treatment of simple diarrhea, referral of complicated cases, screening of children <5 years for malnutrition, referral of high-risk pregnant women to the health facilities for ANC, provision of maternal kits and health sensitization. Other activities carried out within the month were the treatment of minor skin infections/irritations and the distribution of Ferrous Folate to pregnant women. 

In the month of July, the CHWs in Kitta engaged over 300 people including children. The CHWs received 95 people with health problems, referred 12 severe cases of malaria and 8 cases severe diarrhea cases to the Ekondo Titi District Hospital. Over 300 persons were sensitized on hygiene (hand washing, food hygiene, body hygiene, and environmental hygiene), preparation of ORS, importance of ANC, infant vaccination, and the proper use of LLINs. A total of 65 children were screened for SAM.

To add, what stood out in the period of implementation was a 3-year-old boy who was diagnosed with severe malaria. Prior to the CHWs visit, he had been having recurrent fever spikes in the evenings, vomiting atleast 3 times a day, and severe body weakness for about a month. His mom had been managing the situation using juice made from locally squeezed herbs because she could not afford a hospital consultation and followup drugs, however, this only brought temporal relieve to the boy. During one of the CHWs home visit sessions this boy was consulted and diagnosed of severe malaria after examination. The CHW administered first aid treatment to him and referred the case to the Ekondo Titi District Hospital for proper treatment and followup. Upon arrival at the hospital, the boy was anemic with Hb less than 3 and was transfused. His family alongside the people in Ekondo Titi express their sincere gratitude to the GlobalGiving crowdfunding platform for the lifesaving assistance provided in communities.

The main challenge faced in the month was poor communication with CHWs caused by faulty network. The plan to continue providing health care services to vulnerable persons, conduct sensitization for health promotion, screen for severe acute malnutrition continues
