KEDV is opening 12 Women and Children Centers in area affected by Turkiye Earthquake that will serve as one of the main spaces in the container cities and neighborhoods where women will receive support on strengthening public health, increase their protection from risks, participate in trainings and psychosocial support activities, access livelihood opportunities such as production, and organize around their needs. Children will be provided with early childhood education and care.
Turkiye Earthquake, hit 11 provinces, was one of the biggest since last 100 years, and resulted in the death of 50,000 people, destroying many houses and leaving thousands without a shelter. Women and children were impacted most, leaving them without an income, without safe spaces, and under risks of living in crowded spaces, with little protection from violence and abuse, and with increased care burden. Women and children need spaces to access services, psychosocial support, economic activities
"Women and children center" is a model where low income women come together for empowerment and for their children to access early childhood education. It supports the Access of low income children to education and provide safe spaces for women to organize around their needs, such as access to basic services, trainings, activities etc. Model was developed by KEDV with a holistic approach as a solution to children's need for care and education and low income women's need for improving their lives
Each center will provide 80 children with daily early childhood education and care services, and another 50 children with activities and toys appropriate for their age, which will support their psychological and physical development. EAch center will serve 100 women with not only short term services, but also long term development opportunities, such as leadership skills, income generation and employment opportunities, also organizing them around their needs and increasing their advocacy skills
