By making their living off carbon capture, indigenous plants are superior in providing nature based solutions to climate change and food security. However, as the desire to restore habitant increases, so does the demand for indigenous seeds. But where do the seeds needed to restore the land come from? This project will generate the possibility of building a seed bank in Kisoga especially of indigenous seeds of plants identified in danger of extinction.
Currently the supply of local native seeds cannot meet the demand. It is crucial that we focus on the cultivation of native plants to improve supply for restoration, but it is even more crucial that we do this in a way that is sustainable, respectful and ultimately beneficial to the plants that we choose to cultivate. These challenges require coordinated action. Indigenous plants are the foundation of all terrestrial food chains, and so ecosystem restoration relies on regenerating the landscape.
The kisoga community seed bank will be dedicated to preserving and multiplying indigenous seeds in Uganda ensuring their conservation for future generations.Indigenous seedbanks hold particular significance for organic farmers as they serve as a treasure troves of native, organically cultivated plant varieties perfectly adapted to local ecosystems.Indigenous seeds saving helps to combat adverse climate crisis, ensures high nutritious food and food diversity in rural setups ensuring food security
Decentralized seed systems approach in agriculture that empowers smallholder farmers to conserve develop and exchange traditional seed varieties. this plays a crucial role in sustaining agricultural biodiversity. Utilizing what nature gives is central to agroecology. This implies that we consider the local community and encourage the use of indigenous seeds and expertise. This helps farmers preserve the underutilized and neglected local seed crops which profoundly impacts their lives.
