By Fay Pretty | PeaceJam UK Coordinator & Youth Team Leader
We are so excited to announce that with the support of our GlobalGiving donors, our new Youth Team programme has continued to create impact and support our young leaders taking part. From the Leeds Slam in November 2023 to the creation of our Winchester event this March, which is proudly for young people by young people.
At our Leeds Slam on November 11th 2023, our Youth Team attended and took part in a day of social action planning and mentor training. The day also showcased the power of peer-to-peer mentoring after a 15-year-old member of our Youth Team who runs a Peace and Humanitarian Club at his school, planned and led a workshop. He talked about how to make negative headlines into positive headlines, as well as how to start your own Peace Club and write a successful letter-writing campaign.
In feedback from the day, a 13-year-old girl said, “I will try to start a new club that will talk about problems in the world”.
The Youth Team are also at the forefront of planning and organising our next conference which will be held at Winchester University on the 16th and 17th March 2024. During our regular meetings, they have chosen this conference’s theme, ‘Our World, Our Way’ which they believe embodies the empowering community aspect of PeaceJam conferences. Additionally, they have been deciding on different workshops and social action project themes, such as nuclear disarmament and racism, for our youth to take part in during the weekend.
Our inspirational keynote speaker will be Harshwardhansinh Zala! As a young teen, he created a drone that can detect landmines and now he runs his own organisation called Aerobotic7. He embodies the next generation of peacemakers, taking after our amazing Nobel Peace Laureate Jody Williams. We cannot wait for him to work with our youth at this conference, and connect with Jody, who will be joining virtually to talk about her work and answer questions.
In the meantime, our Youth Team will be receiving further training and support to develop their own social action projects! We could not have kept this momentum without the continued support of our GlobalGiving donors, thank you for making this possible.
