Women LEAD plans to deliver professional development workshops and professional mentoring for young, aspiring women leaders in Nepal. We aim to equip these young women with the skills and knowledge they need to become leaders across all sectors of Nepalese society. Women LEAD will also provide young women with seed funding to implement their own community advocacy projects which challenge traditional attitudes and norms that are preventing young women from achieving their potential.
In the patriarchal society of Nepal, entrenched gender stereotypes and discriminatory gender and cultural norms limit the ability of young young and girls to make decisions about their own future. Girls are often expected to marry when they finish high school and as a result are denied the opportunity to pursue higher education and employment opportunities. This has resulted in a distinct lack of female representation in senior leadership positions across all sectors of society in Nepal.
Women LEAD will help to build the confidence, skills and leadership capacities of budding young women leaders through this project. We aim to provide professional development workshops, mentoring and seed funding to 300 young women in our alumni community aged 18-26 years old to help them to become leaders in their chosen fields. Our training sessions will cover the skills and sectors in which our alumni are currently studying and working, such as development, marketing, technology and law.
We expect that the project will also have enduring, long term impacts on the lives of the 300 young women in our alumni community. Through obtaining new skills, knowledge and seed funding our alumni will be able to gain more confidence and agency, rise to the top of their fields, and be empowered to actively challenge the stereotypes and norms that are holding young women and girls back from achieving their potential.
