Dear Donors,
In the rural villages of Mangochi District, Malawi, children with physical and intellectual disabilities face significant barriers to healthcare, rehabilitation, and adequate nutrition. Poverty, long distances to health facilities, and limited access to specialized services often prevent families from obtaining the care their children need, affecting their development, independence, and social inclusion.
Through our collaboration with the Tiyende Pamodzi Group, Aleimar supports 500 children living in conditions of extreme poverty or neglect. The project provides free physiotherapy sessions, nutritional support for children affected by malnutrition, assistance with medical treatments, and regular home visits to monitor each child's progress. Parents and caregivers also receive guidance and practical training to continue rehabilitation exercises at home.
Tiyende Pamodzi operates 12 community-based physiotherapy centers across the district, bringing essential services closer to families who would otherwise struggle to access them. These centers provide not only rehabilitation but also opportunities for caregivers to receive advice, share experiences, and learn how to better support their children's development.
Access to mobility aids is another crucial need for children with disabilities. Recently, 30 wheelchairs were distributed to children in the community, offering them greater opportunities to move around, participate in daily activities, and engage with their families and peers. For children with limited mobility, a wheelchair can make a meaningful difference in everyday life, supporting greater independence and reducing some of the physical challenges they face. It can also ease the daily responsibilities of caregivers, who often have to carry or assist their children over long distances.
Despite this important achievement, the need for wheelchairs remains high. Many children in the area still lack suitable mobility aids, limiting their ability to move safely and comfortably and participate fully in community life. The distribution of 30 wheelchairs represents an important step, but it also highlights how much more remains to be done. Continued support is essential to help reach more children and ensure that disability does not become an additional source of exclusion for those already living in vulnerable conditions.
In just a few days, the Aleimar team will travel to Malawi for its annual monitoring visit. This will be an important opportunity to meet children and their families, visit the communities involved, and work alongside Tiyende Pamodzi to assess progress and better understand the most urgent needs, including the continued demand for rehabilitation services and mobility aids.
Your generosity makes this work possible. By supporting the project, you help ensure that children with disabilities are not left without care because of poverty or geographical isolation. Together, we can bring rehabilitation, nourishment, and greater opportunities for independence, dignity, and inclusion to children and families in Mangochi.
Thank you for standing alongside us and the children of Malawi.
