Impact Report

By Bilikisu Lawal | Food & Community Engagement Officer

This report provides a comprehensive overview of the humanitarian support extended to 250 displaced families in Plateau State. The initiative aimed to address the immediate and pressing needs of these families who were forced to flee their homes due to ongoing conflicts and instability in the region. Our efforts focused on delivering essential food items, shelter, health and hygiene supplies, and psychosocial support to help these families regain stability in the face of adversity.

Background

Plateau State has been significantly affected by violence and unrest, leading to the displacement of thousands of families. These displacements have resulted in severe vulnerabilities, including food insecurity, lack of shelter, and inadequate access to health services. Many families have lost their homes, livelihoods, and community support systems. In response to this crisis, our organization mobilized resources and initiated a targeted support program for the most affected families.

Objectives

The primary objectives of this initiative are as follows:

  • Immediate Relief: Provide urgent assistance to 250 displaced families to meet their basic needs.
  • Food Security: Ensure access to nutritious food to alleviate hunger and malnutrition.
  • Health and Hygiene Maintenance: Distribute hygiene kits to promote health and sanitation.
  • Psychosocial Support: Facilitate counseling and support services to help families cope with trauma and stress.

Support Activities

  1. Food Distribution:
    • Items Distributed: Each family received comprehensive food packs including staple items such as:
      • 10 kg of rice
      • 5 kg of beans
      • 5 liters of cooking oil
      • 10 cans of assorted vegetables
      • 5 kg of sugar
    • Distribution Process: Food boxes were assembled by volunteers and distributed to the displaced camps to ensure accessibility. Families were informed in advance to facilitate smooth distribution.
    • Impact: The food supplies provided each family with enough sustenance to last for two weeks, alleviating immediate hunger concerns and reducing reliance on local markets.
  2. Health and Hygiene Kits:
    • Contents of the Kits: Each family received hygiene kits that included:
      • Soap and hand sanitizers
      • Toothpaste and toothbrushes
      • Menstrual hygiene products (pads)
      • Detergent for washing clothes
    • Distribution Method: Kits were distributed alongside food packs to ensure that families had access to vital hygiene products.
    • Impact: The hygiene kits promoted better health practices and helped prevent the spread of diseases, which is crucial in crowded living conditions.
  3. Psychosocial Support:
    • Counseling Services: Engaged trained counselors to provide emotional support and trauma-informed care to families.
    • Activities Conducted: Group therapy sessions and individual counseling were offered to help families process their experiences and foster community resilience.
    • Impact: This support enabled families to express their feelings, share their experiences, and build a sense of community, which is essential for emotional healing.

Challenges Encountered

  • Logistical Issues: Some families were located in remote areas, making it difficult to reach them with supplies. Transportation limitations and damaged roads exacerbated these challenges.
  • Resource Limitations: Initial shortages of food and hygiene supplies led to delays in the distribution process, necessitating rapid mobilization of additional resources.
  • Security Concerns: Ongoing conflict in certain areas posed risks to both volunteers and beneficiaries during distribution efforts.

Outcomes

  • Beneficiaries Reached: Successfully provided direct support to 250 families, ensuring they had access to food, shelter, and essential supplies.
  • Community Feedback: Families expressed profound gratitude for the assistance, highlighting the relief and support it provided during a challenging time. Feedback was gathered through surveys and informal discussions, indicating a positive response to the initiative.

Conclusion

The support provided to the displaced families from Plateau State has made a significant and positive impact on their immediate needs. However, the ongoing challenges faced by these families necessitate continued support and intervention. The need for long-term recovery strategies is paramount as families aim to rebuild their lives and regain stability.

Recommendations

  • Continued Support: Advocate for sustained assistance to help families transition from emergency relief to recovery and self-sufficiency.
  • Community Engagement: Involve displaced families in the planning and implementation of future support initiatives to ensure their needs and preferences are effectively addressed.
  • Partnership Development: Strengthen collaborations with local and international organizations to enhance resource mobilization and create comprehensive support networks for displaced individuals.

This report serves as a call to action for ongoing support and collaboration to address the needs of vulnerable populations from Plateau State, Nigeria. Together, we can make a lasting difference in the lives of those affected by displacement.
