Animal-Kind International is hugely important to us. It is through their ongoing support that we are able to provide services other than our usual spay/neuter and vaccination during spay days. Their funding allows us to treat sick or injured dogs, cats, horses, and donkeys - or any animal brought to us in need of veterinary care. With left over funds from AKI, we can sterilize many more cats than we'd otherwise be able to. So much of our funding is specifically for spay and neuter of dogs, and without AKI donors we would have to leave out many of the cats whose owners come to the mobile clinic.

Having to turn away an animal in need would break our hearts, and thanks to Animal-Kind International donors we never have to! Thanks a million!!!

Here are pictures (see below) of the cats we were able to sterilize during the end of March/early April mobile trip. Thirty-eight cats were sterilized during that trip all with AKI money!

During the March/April clinics, 139(!!!) old customers came for parasite treatment and booster vaccination (68 dogs and cats)--all covered by AKI!

We had so many ticks on the dogs, you will not believe it! AKI covered internal and external parasite treatment. Check out the picture of the dog with ticks in her ear [sorry, we're unable to show this picture on the GlobalGiving site, but email me if you'd like to see what your donations are preventing and treating-when prevention is too late].

During HAH-Mobile's April trip, 6% of all female dogs operated on had an infection of the uterus-- pyometra--which most often occurs in middle aged, unspayed dogs. Without treatment, pyometra can lead to kidney failure and death. AKI donors funded the treatment of 7 dogs that came to the mobile clinic with pyometra. Working in towns without vets, HAH-Mobile is the only chance of help for females with uterine infections, and spaying is the only means to prevent it.

Thanks to the continual support of Animal-Kind International, who help with spay and neuter of cats and veterinary equipment [AKI donates sutures, which are higher quality than those found in Namibia] we are able to provide such services.

2017-Off to a great start for Have a Heart!

HAH mobile clinic during the January 2017 voyage

I'm happy to report that AKI's GlobalGiving project supporting Have A Heart efforts to spay/neuter and provide vet care to under-served parts of Namibia is off to a great start this year-and in large part, that's thanks to AKI supporters!

After the December test run of the HAH mobile clinic (which we previously reported on), HAH-Luderitz/Aus/Bethanie asked us to support the mobile clinic. Since HAH funds (from other than AKI) are specifically for s/n of cats and dogs, HAH requested that we fill the funding gaps, mainly vet care (other than s/n) for cats and dogs, horses and donkeys that are brought to the mobile clinic. And with leftover AKI money, HAH would spay/neuter additional cats and dogs. Of course, we agreed.

Overall, the results for the January HAH mobile trip were:

Spay/Neuter Surgeries:

28 January Uis Township (included travel on a terrible road for some hours, so only worked during the afternoon for a few hours): 7 dogs

29 January Uis Township: 25 dogs, 6 cats

30 January Khorixas Township: 20 dogs, 3 cats

31 Kamanjab Township: 24 dogs, 1 cat

1 February Outjo Township: 14 dogs, 1 cat

2 February Outjo Township: 20 dogs, 1 cat

A few donkeys were brought to the clinic, but all were fine and didn't need any treatment (see picture).

Since HAH didn't need AKI funds for vet care in January, AKI support covered 3 male cats neuters @ US$25=US$75 each and 8 female cats spays @ US$35 each=US$240

HAH Mobile reserved the additional AKI funds for their March 2017 mobile trip. That trip took place at the end of the month, and the s/n van traveled to: Keetmans, Bethanie, Aus, Luderitz, Grunau-1st time ever (36 dogs and cats sterilized) and Karasburg-1st time ever there too! We're still waiting for final numbers for the March trip, but so far we know that AKI funds covered:

Parasite Treatment Solution 3,5 % (ml) x 52 for 136 dogs and 2 horses (see picture)

25 male cats neuters @ US$25 each=US$625

Also, AKI funds were used to treat a dog that was bitten by a puff adder (see 2 pictures-the wound looks bad, but the dog fully recovered and is fine!) and 2 dogs that had burn wounds (see 2 pictures).

About US$225 is still remaining of AKI funds, which will be used for the next mobile trip. The mobile clinic willl head to Okahandja in May and will target Fyf Rand Kamp. This is a settlement with around 5,000 people, they don't have running water or electricity or toilets in their houses-like most of the townships where HAH Mobile travels to (see picture of Bethanie, for an example). In the next AKI-GlobalGiving project report, I'll report on the outcome of that mobile clinic trip. And you can always check the AKI Blog (see link below) for updates.

Our goal is that all cat, dog, horse, and donkey owners will be as caring as the 2 in the picture below, this "super cute couple" (as Geesche called them), visited the mobile clinic when it was in Bethanie this March, to say thank you over and over again for rescuing their dog, Ballas, last year. He was very sick at the time, and unable to go through surgery. His owners brought him to the March 2017 clinic for his neuter operation. They told Geesche that Ballas is their youngest child.

AKI Donors to the Rescue!

Dear AKI Supporters,

Thank you for coming to the rescue of this foal!

Usually, your donations to AKI for Have a Heart's spay/neuter campaigns support the sterilization of dogs and cats in Luderitz, Aus, and Bethanie, and also provide funds for treating any emergency condition or injury. But sometimes during a spay/neuter campaign, the HAH team gets a surprise.

During the spay day in Bethanie in October, a donkey was brought to the clinic and needed surgery (we gave the ok to cover that with AKI funds), and then in December, in Stinkwater (yes, Namibia), the HAH vet (Dr. Maya) was called to help a little 3-week old horse (see pictures). He had injuries that were so full of pus, he was dehydrated because it was too painful for him to drink, he was so weak. Dr. Maya didn't think he would pull through. But with the help of Dr. Maya and his family, he stood up to his new name, Fighter. We were happy to provide the funding to cover his treatment-and to save his life! HAH officially only supports spay/neuter of dogs and cats, so it was really important that we-our AKI donors-were able to fill the gap.

HAH now has a mobile clinic, which will allow HAH-Luderitz, Aus, & Bethhanie (and other HAH groups) to go farther into Namibia's small towns and settlements this coming year, where they expect to find more donkeys, horses, sheep, and goats. AKI will be there to help them with any emergency needs.

At the beginning of January, HAH's Geesche went along on the 1st trip in the mobile clinic (see picture of the mobile clinic). She came away seeing that "all these little towns have so much more for us to do and there are endless little towns." The 1st official trip in the mobile cinic was just yesterday (21 January), to Karibib, with 30 spay/neuters (sadly, 2 dogs had to be put down.) With your help, we'll be supporting future mobile clinics and lifesaving rescues, and of course, we'll keep you updated on progress.
