Spayathon update & check out the new doghouses!

HAH Spayathon in Aus, 21 July 2015

Dear GlobalGiving donors,

In the last project update, I had mentioned that Have A Heart-Luderitz was worried that because of lack of funds, they would have to cancel the next Aus spayathon scheduled for July, but when HAH received the AKI disbursement from the GlobalGiving project, they were so relieved--the spayathon would take place.

Now I am happy to be able to send you pictures and information on just what your donations have allowed HAH to accomplish in Aus. Geesche sent this message:

"July Spay Day in Aus!
We had our 3rd Spay Day in Aus yesterday [21 July] and a whopping 7 cats and 21 dogs were spayed/neutered!
Yeah!" (See the picture of owners and their pets waiting for surgery.)

The July Spay Day in Aus was entirely funded by donors to AKI's GlobalGiving project!

We also have great news about the doghouses. Sixteen have been built, painted, and distributed--fully funded by our GlobalGiving project.

Lady, who was spayed at an HAH spayathon in November 2014, received her HAH-AKI doghouse on 18 July (see 2 pictures).

I especially like the doghouse named after Animal-Kind International (see picture)!!

Thanks to our donors we will remain on the GlobalGiving site for another month--through August. But we will need at least one UNIQUE donation in August to remain on the site in September (and each month, we need at least one unique donation to remain on the site in the following month). Please tell your friends about our AKI GlobalGiving project--we rely on you, our donors--you know us best--to get the word out. 100% of all donations are sent to HAH for spay/neuter and doghouses!

Thanks to you, we are making a difference!

March HAH Spayathon

When I notified Geesche with Have A Heart-Luderitz about the GlobalGiving funds that Animal-Kind International is sending to her (this 2nd batch of GG funds=US$700) for spay/neuter and dog house construction, in her email response, she was obviously delighted:

"Last night I was thinking that I might have to cancel the July Spayathon because we might not have enough funds to cover the costs. I still need to pay off the March Spayathon. THANK YOU!!"

Geesche will use the GlobalGiving funds we're sending to cover the remaining March costs and to hold a July Spayathon. Thanks to you, our donors, the July Spayathon will not have to be cancelled, and dogs and cats like these in the pictures (all sterilized by HAH during March), will get their chance to be sterilized! Wolfie (see photo with his owner) was one of 22 dogs spayed or neutered during the spayathon in Aus in March, and the kitty, with her owner was one of three cats.

The dog house project is coming along, as well. Geesche told us that next week they'll paint the first six dog houses and deliver them. In conjunction with the delivery, HAH-Luderitz will hold an animal awareness and dipping day on May 23. (I promise to send pictures in the next GlobalGiving update.)

Other sponsors--in Namibia--have stepped forward to support an HAH spay day in Aus (May 27) and in Luderitz (May 29). It's always exciting news when our AKI partner organizations are able to raise additional funds--beyond what AKI raises for them-- and become more sustainable organizations.

But your support is still needed! We've managed to remain on the GlobalGiving site and continue to raise money for this very worthwhile project, but we need a "unique" donor every month to continue to be able to fundraise on the GlobalGiving site--and we still need several more donations to earn a permanent place on GlobalGiving. Great demand for dog houses in Luderitz & surroundings

Although the dogs feel otherwise about spay/neuter surgery!

Dear AKI Donors,

Your GlobalGiving donations are being used for Have A Heart-Luderitz spay/neuter surgeries, with some set aside for the dog house project.

Attached to this report you'll see pictures of 2 of the 21 dogs that were fixed during the 24 January "spayathon" in Luderitz. The spayathon--which was funded mainly with AKI-GlobalGiving funds, concentrated on dogs and cats from Area 7, one of the very poor sections of Luderitz. At HAH spayathons, dogs and cats are also vaccinated and dewormed. Kamuri, the doberman cross in the pictures, has tick bite fever, so her owner was given pills to treat her. A dog can die from tick bite fever, but once diagnosed, the cure is not a difficult one-it's just important to begin treatment early.

Mr.Wise (see picture) was the only kitty to be neutered at the 24 January spayathon.

Spotty (who isn't spotted!-as you can see in his photo) was not going to go easily for his surgery, but Dr. Maya, holding him by a leash, made a plan to make friends with him, and off they drove for neutering. Sometimes you have to be underhanded!

If it can be arranged, the next HAH-Luderitz spayathon will be planned a little farther afield, in Aus, a small town 124 km east of Luderitz. With fewer than 1000 people, Aus, has no vet or SPCA but a lot of dogs and cats. So HAH-Luderitz decided to expand to Aus and help no/low income cat and dog owners there. The date is TBD, and depends on availability of Dr. Baines and his team and available funds. Geesche told us, "our dream would be to have the first SpayDay in Aus end of March on top of the Luderitz SpayDay! Let's see if our dream will come true - everybody please hold thumbs."

The dog house project is moving ahead.....full steam. Geesche sent the following news that she asked me to pass on to donors:

"We are sooo excited about the dog house project!!! With support from Animal-Kind International we will be able to pay one or two unemployed youth (it looks like this will be organized by the Peace Corps youth project) in Luderitz to build around 15 - 20 dog houses. In case we will get all the all the material we need sponsored we might be even able to build up to 25 dog houses.
This will be:

Pallet wood: Megabuild Pupewitz Luderitz is already busy collecting some pallets - we hope there will be enough soon!
Paint: Diaz Fittings in Luderitz said they will give us paint the dogs houses will be painted colour full and with fun!
Children and an anonymous artist in Luderitz will paint the houses with help from the Buchter News girls! [journalists]
Carpet: Element Riders Backpackers in Luderitz will sponsor carpet tiles for the dog houses and lots of time and support!
Blankets: awesome Dr. Baines/Windhoek Animal Hospital will sponsor blankets for the dogs!

We still need:

A special paint for the wood, we don't want anyone be able to use them as fire wood and we still need nails and simple tools.

Geesche has 43 dogs on her list for dog houses! But so far only 13 houses. Her response: "WOW!!! I'm a little bit lost for words.... That is a lot.... Imagine how many more will there be..??!!"

I think that illustrates the importance and absolute necessity of our work with HAH! AKI thanks our GlobalGiving donors for making it all possible.
