This project will assist deaf people in Gaza to purchase reflective vests with a global 'deaf' symbol on it so that members of the public can identify the person is deaf and assist them by getting them to shelter and directing them to food sources or alerting them to bomb warnings to save their lives. Also, deaf people have requested torches to be able to communicate in currently extremely dark conditions.
There are currently about 15000 deaf people in Gaza and deafness in a person is not easily recognised physically. Deaf people cannot hear air raid sirens or calls for people to gather in a specific place for food. Deaf people are bombed and often arrive to the food places when the food is already finished. Stories of deaf people being shot because of their 'wild gestures' (sign language) abound in the region.
This project plans to buy reflective vests with the international 'deaf' symbol on the front and back so that hearing people can alert deaf people to air raid sirens or calls for people to mobilise. Soldiers will also be aware that deaf people's 'wild gestures' are attempts to communicate. The purchase of torches for deaf people in Gaza will aid them to communicate with and see other people as they cannot hear them.
It will depend on how long the fighting goes on in this region but the impact of the vests and the torches will spearhead solutions of this kind for deaf people faced with similar situations in future. Another long-term impact will also bring awareness of the dire situations faced by deaf people in times of disasters and humanitarian crisis.
