Janadevi Nepali ( name changed), a 32-year-old mother from a remote village in Mugu, lives with her husband and five daughters. Her family depends on daily wage labor and small farming. Despite the hardships, she was determined to continue her ninth pregnancy, as her family hoped for a son.

During her pregnancy, Janadevi suddenly developed severe headaches, swelling in her legs, and intense pain. She came to PHASE Nepal’s health post, where our team quickly realized she was in a life-threatening condition. Without urgent care, both she and her unborn baby were at high risk.

The health workers immediately provided emergency treatment, counseled her family, and arranged for her referral to the district hospital. Understanding the family’s financial struggles, PHASE Nepal also provided transport support and sent a trained health worker to accompany her to the hospital. This timely intervention saved her life.

Even after discharge, when her condition worsened again, she returned to the PHASE clinic. Our team reassessed her, supported the family once more, and ensured she was safely readmitted to hospital care. Today, Janadevi is stable and receiving the follow-up care she needs.

Testimony from Janadevi:
"I was very scared when my body started swelling, and I could not even walk. The health workers cared for me, gave me medicine, and even supported us with travel money. Without their help, I don’t think I would have survived. They were like family to me in that difficult time."

Impact:

  • Timely diagnosis and emergency support saved the life of a mother and her unborn child.
  • PHASE Nepal provided treatment, counseling, transport, and referral support.
  • Families in remote Mugu are building trust in local health workers for life-saving maternal care.

This case shows the life-saving role of frontline health workers in remote Nepal. With your support, PHASE Nepal can continue to provide emergency maternal care, referrals, and vital healthcare access for women and children in some of the most isolated communities.
