Janak (pseudonym) a 42-year-old man from Loli village in Mugu district, one of the remote areas where PHASE Nepal has been providing primary health care services. He lives there with his wife and three children. His family depends on subsistence agriculture and animal rearing for the survival of his family. Like many households in this geographically isolated region, they have to travel long distance through difficult terrain, poor roads to access health care services.
In February 2026, while his sheep were grazing in the steep hilly area about an hour away on foot from his village, he decided to collect fodder as well for his animals. He climbed on a tree. When he was chopping fodder, unfortunately he slipped of and fell down in the rocky slope, hitting trees and rocks as he descended. He landed in a difficult to reach area of a cliff where he was stuck for an hour before the people from his village were able to locate him. It took them additional two hours to rescue and bring down to the health facility at Dhainakot.
When he first arrived at the PHASE supported health facility at Dhainakot, Janak was unconscious and had multiple deep cut injuries on his head. PHASE Health team promptly provided primary treatment, stabilized the condition of the patient, however considering severity of his condition the health team decided to refer him to a higher center for proper treatment following treatment protocol.
Although his family wanted him to receive better care, they hesitated to take him to a higher-level health facility because they did not have sufficient financial resources to cover the costs of travel, food during the journey, and treatment. Recognizing their predicament, PHASE staff paid the cost of transportation.
As a result, he reached the higher-level center on time and successfully underwent surgery. He received proper care, was discharged from the hospital after 22 days, and returned to his village in good health.
His return to the village was celebrated by the community with garlands and a gathering. Janak visited the PHASE Nepal health team as soon as he arrived and expressed his deepest gratitude for the support they had provided.
He said, “I am alive today because of PHASE Nepal. You saved someone who was at death’s door. I am deeply grateful for your life-saving support.”
Prompt action and timely decision-making were critical in saving Janak’s life. His case is one of many that shows how quick response by health workers in remote areas can be life-saving. PHASE Nepal is able to respond to such emergencies through continued support from our generous partners and donors like you. Your contributions make a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals and families especially in remote rural locations where people have to struggle in accessing basic health care services. We are deeply grateful for your highly valuable support in creating positive change.
