Saving Mothers' Lives in Myanmar

By Charles Omofomwan | Programmes Officer

Myanmar is a country with one of the highest maternal mortality rates in the world, with an estimated 282 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2015. Many of these deaths are preventable if only mothers have access to quality emergency obstetric care. That is why we are supporting the transformation of maternal healthcare in Myanmar. We have continued implementing activities to train and equip health professionals with essential skills and knowledge to provide life-saving care to mothers and newborns. Some of our activities include Basic Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (BEmONC) training and Advanced Emergency Obstetric Care training (AEmONC).

The BEmONC training covers topics such as antenatal care, normal labour and delivery, postnatal care, newborn resuscitation, and management of common complications such as postpartum haemorrhage, eclampsia, sepsis, and obstructed labour. The training uses interactive and practical methods like lectures, case studies, simulations, and skills practice. We reached 195 health professionals from 14 health facilities across Myanmar, improving their confidence and competence in handling obstetric emergencies.

The AEmONC training covers topics such as lower segment caesarean section (LSCS), nerve blocks, spinal anaesthesia, and obstetric hysterectomy. These are complex and life-saving procedures that require advanced skills and knowledge. The training also uses various teaching techniques, such as case-based discussions, simulations, and skills training. We reached 12 medical doctors, medics, and an anaesthetic MSc trainee, enhancing their ability to perform complex and critical interventions.

We have made a significant impact on the quality and accessibility of maternal healthcare in Myanmar. The health professionals who participated in our training have reported increased knowledge, awareness, and confidence in managing obstetric cases. Our work is not only transforming maternal healthcare but also saving mothers’ lives in Myanmar.

We are proud of what we have achieved so far and are committed to continuing our work and expanding our impact. We aim to reach even more communities, further transforming maternal care and healthcare access in Myanmar. We thank our donors for their support and trust, which enabled us to make this possible. Together, we can create lasting change and contribute to the well-being of mothers and children in Myanmar.
