This project aims to assist the victims of accidents involving landmines and UXOs (Unexploded Ordnance) in the northern region of Uganda in attaining financial stability and improving their physical conditions. The specific activities will be : 1) providing start-up kits to 30 beneficiaries to start small-scale, self-owned business such as retail shops, salons, second-hand clothing shops. 2) providing medical treatment including rehabilitation and prosthetic limbs to 15 beneficiaries.
People living in Lira in the northern region of Uganda, have been severly afflicted by landmines and UXOs which were scatterd all over the region throughout the civil war that lasted for the past 20 years. Many people were badly injured, and some of them had to have their legs and/or arms amputated. With their disabilities, it is very difficult for them to find a job to become financially independent. Most of them are still suffering from unhealed wounds, and are in need of medical assistance.
The project aims to promote social reintegration of the victims through financial and medical support. AAR JAPAN, in cooperaition with ULSA, will provide start-up kits (500 US dollars worth of goods such as commodities sold in a retail shop or solar panels to produce the necesary electricity to run a small-scale, self-owned business) for those willing to take up business on their own. We will also provide rehabilitaiton services or prosthetic limbs for those who need medical assistance.
As mentioned above, 30 people will benefit from small scale, self-owned business support, and 15 people will benefit from medical treatment. By helping beneficiaries secure sources of income, the beneficiaries' and their families' living conditions are expected to be improved. Also, by improving the beneficiaries' physical conditions, the range of activities they can engage in will be widened, which will lead to more opprotunites for re-integration into society.
