Challenge

ARCAS will be receiving and providing humane conditions to a group of Yellow-Naped Amazon parrots that are being relocated due to the closing of a zoo in El Salvador. These birds are the target of poaching for the illegal wildlife trade in the region due to their advanced ability to imitate the human voice and other sounds, and are classified as Critically Endangered by the IUCN. It is estimated that only 500 individuals remain in the wild on the Pacific coast of Guatemala.

Solution

The primary objective of this project is the construction of purpose-built aviaries designed to replicate the natural habitats of the Yellow-Naped Amazons. These enclosures will prioritize spaciousness and enrichment, fostering the birds' physical and psychological well-being. Additionally, ARCAS emphasizes the importance of public education, leveraging this project to raise awareness about wildlife trafficking and animal welfare issues.

Long-Term Impact

The transfer of the Yellow-Naped Amazons signifies a pivotal moment in addressing the consequences of neglect and mistreatment in captive environments while improving animal welfare standards. ARCAS is committed to ensuring the well-being of these birds by offering expert veterinary care, suitable housing facilities, and enrichment programs tailored to promoting their physical and psychological health.
